Zur Serie Q
Das immer wiederkehrende Format von 80 x 80 betont das Serielle, das unendlich Fortführbare in D. Balthaus‘ Arbeit. Das Quadrat ist zugleich vorab festgelegtes Experimentierfeld für die Wirkung von Farbe und die spielerische Erforschung von den chemischen Eigenschaften und Reaktionen der Farbpigmente. Ausgangsidee für diese Serie waren Überlegungen zum Sichtbarmachen von Materie, Luft z.B., die eben nicht transparent und leicht ist, sondern gefüllt mit Teilchen in unterschiedlichsten Verdichtungen. Die entstandenen Bilder assoziieren Motive, die gelbgrünen Zusammenballungen, Erinnerung an Unwetter, Ausschnitte von Sternenhimmel, sich verteilende explodierende Teilchen, Staubpartikel. Beim nahen Herantreten an die einzelnen Bilder suggerieren sie Herangezoomtes, unter die Lupe genommenes, materielle oder virtuelle Strukturen, Netze. Überraschungen, die sich durch Daniela Balthaus künstlerische Arbeitsweise zufällig ergeben. Sie nutzt die unterschiedlichen Eigenschaften der Farbpigmente, um deren Wirkung und Ausdruck sie aus Erfahrung weiß, sie berechnet bei der Verwendung von Farbe die besonderen Reflexionen von Licht auf matten Tempera-Oberflächen mit und trotzdem bezieht sie den Zufall mit ein, ja fordert ihn durch ihre experimentelle Arbeitsweise geradezu heraus. Sie lässt sich lenken, aber stets bereit im richtigen Moment loszulassen, das Bild als Ergebnis stehen zu lassen.

About Series Q
The format 80 x 80 cm, used continuously, emphasizes the idea of seriality and unlimitedness in Daniela Balthaus’ work. The square at the same time is the predefined field of experiment for the effects of colours and the playground for her research into the chemical properties and reactions of the colour pigments. Sparked off was Series Q by considerations on how to make matter like air visible, that is not just a transparent and lofty nothing but filled with particles in a variety of condensations. The created paintings evoke motives, the yellow-green clusterings remembrance of thundershowers, pieces of a starry sky, an expanding cloud of particles after an explosion, dust particles. Upon a closer approach the single pictures suggest something zoomed in, magnified under a lense, material and virtual structures, webs. Surprises, that are created by Daniela Balthaus’ artistic approach. She utilizes the different properties of the pigments whose effects and expressions she knows by experience. While using colour she takes the particular reflections of light on matt tempera surfaces into account. Nevertheless, at the same time she considers the chance, well, even provokes it by her experimental approach. She lets herself be guided, however always ready to let loose in the right moment to have the final painting as the result.
